He has been trained in classical guitar, oud and modal music in Greece and Germany. The style of this oudist and composer virtuoso delivers an original mix of oriental traditions, European jazz and contemporary classical music. Since 1996, he has played in various festivals and projects throughout Europe, Middle East and Japan, working with well-known musicians: Bijan Chemirani, Madjid Bekkas, Behnam Manahenji, Chris Dahlgren, Hayden Chisholm,... Teaching oud at the University of Macedonia since 2005, he also directs the Music Village Forum, in Greece.

At the head of a group of 7 musicians, he will present the project Udopia during a Precious Moment in the Courtyard of the Archbishop’s palace, on Thursday, July 13th at 7:30 pm, in co-production with the International Festival d’Aix-en-Provence.

From a few of his compositions, Thimios Atzakas proposes you to explore the world of Greek contemporary modal music and the first scales’ systems (diatonic, chromatic, pentatonic) which still constitute the basis of this music. The workshop will particularly be focused on the power of modal improvisation, by using contemporary techniques adapted to the instrument: tapping, extended legatos, fingerpicking and fingerstyle...
Finally, you will work on a selection of polyrhythmic mélodies from Northern Greece, enriched with modal elements and maqâmât.
